The
War
Legacies Project wishes you all the best as
you start your
new life together.
Not many people put cows, pigs, chickens,
wheelchairs, or new homes on their Wedding Registry
but then again there are not that many people like
Stephanie and Brad in this world.
Stephanie and Brad have decided that in lieu of gifts they would like to
help the War Legacies Project (WLP) in our work to
assist the poor and disabled in Viet Nam. WLP works with
families in the Vietnam who have children with
multiple physical and developmental disabilities.
Many of these disabilities are believe to be related
to use of Agent Orange and other chemical herbicides during the the
American War in Vietnam from 1961- 71.
Most of
the families we work with earn less than $20/month. Your donation will make a difference in
one of the families that we work with who are
struggling every day to overcome huge obstacles. With your support WLP will help
families increase their annual income by purchasing
cows, pigs, chickens and other farm animals to raise.
Or if you choose you can help a family member start a small business
or obtain vocational training. Alternatively,
your donation can help WLP purchase
wheelchairs, fund life saving surgeries; construct
an adequate home; or build a classroom and
train a teacher in special education.
Below you will find a selection of some of our
projects. Donations to WLP are tax deductible in the
United States.
Income generation Projects
In association with the Vietnam Red
Cross and the Viet Nam Association of Victims of Agent
Orange/Dioxin WLP is helping families with disabled
children, including those believe to be affected by Agent
Orange to increase their income through animal husbandry,
the setting up small businesses, or by learning a new trade.
$500 will help a family set up a small business
or to have a family member receive vocational
training to learn a new trade.
Home Construction
In association with the Viet
Nam Red Cross WLP helps renovate or construct homes for
poor families with severely disabled children.

Support
for Surgeries
In
association with the Hue Medical School and the Office of
Genetic Counseling and Disabled Children WLP supports
the cost of surgeries and medical care for children with
congenital heart defects, cleft palate, club foot and other
surgically correctible conditions. A heart
surgery costs an average of $3500, Cleft palate surgery $50.
However, any level of donation will help change the live of a child
in need of life saving or live changing surgery.
Construction of
Classrooms
In
association with the Office of Genetic Counseling and
Disabled Children at the Hue University of Medicine WLP is building classrooms and training teachers in rural districts
of Thua Thien Hue province. While children with Down's
Syndrome and other developmental disabilities are able to attend
primary school in Vietnam more than half do not due to lack of teachers
trained in special education, developmentally disabled children in rural
areas in particular often do not attend school. $3000 will build
and equip a classroom in a rural village, $2000 will train a teacher in
special education, pay her salary and provide lunches for the students for a
year enabling children with special needs to attend school.
Wheel Chairs
In
addition to providing income generation for families WLP helps families
obtain proper wheelchairs and other accessibility for their disabled
children. With the help of doctors and physical therapists the children are
measured for a chair that meets their physical needs and condition.
There are several factories in Vietnam that manufacture wheelchairs keeping
the price reasonable. A donation of $200 - $250 will enable WLP to fit a
child or young adult with a proper chair.

WLP also welcomes general support donations to help us
continue our work. Please feel free to contact Susan
